President | Mirjavad Hashemi (email)

Hashemi is a third-year Ph.D. candidate in the electrical engineering program in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Hashemi will serve as the Graduate Student Organization president for the 2019-20 academic year.

For his doctoral work, Hashemi is working under the supervision of Assistant Professor Sara Eftekharnejad. They are investigating power system operation and planning under uncertainty imposed by heavy penetration of renewable energy resources. Before coming to Syracuse, Mirjavad earned a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology and Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, Iran.

 

VP Internal Affairs | Nick Mason (email)

Nick Mason (he/him) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of History. His primary area of study is Chinese immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century. Nick’s current research focuses on anti-immigrant mob violence, including organized nativism, racism, and lynching. Nick has served as a teaching assistant to numerous undergraduate history courses, including America to 1865 (HST 101), Crime and Society in U.S. History, Early Modern Europe, and Modern China. Previously, he has performed archival research in California and studied Mandarin Chinese in Shanghai, China.

Prior to becoming GSO Internal Vice President, Nick has served as an Academic Program Senator, a member of the GSO Finance Committee, Faculty Advisor for the SU Anime Club, and in numerous History Graduate Student Organization elected positions. This is his second year as VP of Internal Affairs for the GSO Nick holds a B.A. in History from Rowan University. He loves cats and his favorite foods are sushi and pizza.

 

VP External Affairs | Rui T. Gomes (email)

Rui T. Gomes is a Master’s Student in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with a concentration on Fluids/Thermal in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Originally from Yonkers, NY and then Wappingers Falls, NY, Rui got a dual degree in Physics (BS) and Astronomy (BA) at SUNY New Paltz. There he did research on Quantum Physics and Optics, studying superposition and quantum entanglement. He also did some work at the John R. Kirk Planetarium where he did public shows.

Prior to becoming the VP of External Affairs, Rui served as a University Senator, involved with the Student Life Committee on the University Senate and the Outreach Committee on the GSO. He plans to graduate to develop and work in sustainable energy until eventually getting involved with science policy.

 

Comptroller | Yousr Dhaouadi (email)

Yousr Dhaouadi is a second-year Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering in the Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering. Her research focuses on the study of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Yousr is an international student from Tunisia who received her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University in 2017. Yousr served on three different executive boards in the role of Finance during her undergraduate career and was previously the Financial Secretary the past 2018-2019 year. She is excited to start her new role as comptroller and get back in the swing of things.
